instrument case, the hinged lid with
white metal inlaid cartouche to the top
with engraved monogram and '5th
Dragoon Guards', opening to reveal
compartmentalised interior, the lid with
white metal ribbed rim and the body of
slim tapering form, 13.4cm high, the 5th
Dragoon guards played a major role in
Wellington’s Peninsula campaign and
gained honours including Salamanca,
where the 5th Dragoon Guards captured
the Staff of the Drum Major of the
French 66th Infantry Regiment.

cigarette case, Birmingham 1938, makers
mark rubbed, of rectangular form, with
engine turning, the front with yellow
metal crest, opening to reveal gilded
interior, having engraved inscription
'Lieut. R. G. Snelgrove, From 'Conidaw'
& Dover patrol, 1939-1940', 13cm high,
6.3oz, Snelgrove became a skipper in the
R.N.R., commanding the motor yacht
Conidaw. Under his command, the ship
entered Calais on 25th May, as part of a
force to rescue the men of the garrison,
she left with 165 men on board.
Snelgrove on the Conidaw made the
crossing to Dunkirk on the 30th and
returned with another 80 soldiers. For
his services at Dunkirk, Snelgrove was
awarded the Distinguishe Service Cross.
