Pair Mid 19th Century wooden staffs for
Bridewell & Bethlem, the tapering staffs
painted in green and black with gilt
lettering 'Bridewell & Bethlem' to top,
each approx. 183cm long, (2), -
Originally built as a palace for Henry
VIII in New Bridge Street, by 1556
Bridewell had become a house of
correction for petty offenders, vagrants
and immoral persons. From the 1570s
Bridewell was governed jointly with
Bethlem Hospital (which treated the
insane) by a Court of Governors, a
seperate house of occupations or
reformatory school for destitute and
delinquent youths of both sexes was
added to Bridewell in 1830. Following
the closure of the house of correction in
1855, the house of occupations changed
its name to King Edwards Schools and
reduced the 'Criminal Element' in its
admissions. Bethlem Royal Hospital and
King Edwards school continued to be
administered jointly until 1948.
