Early 20th Century Canadian Nuu-
Chah-Nulth carved wooden totem pole,
carved and painted with figures and
animals, the reverse labelled 'Gransden
Lodge, Bedfordshire, England', 116cm
high, - the totem pole is made by a Nuu-
Chah-Nulth artist who are indigenous
people of the West Coast of Vancouver
Island, British Columbia in Canada, it is
likely that the totem pole was brought
to England by a Canadian stationed at
Gransden Lodge Airfield. Gransden
Lodge Airfield is a former wartime
airfield, it was opened in April 1942 as
an operational bomber airfield, at the
end of 1945 the airfield was transferred
to transport command but the last
operational squadron was disbanded in
Feb. 1946. No. 421 squadron RCAF was
a unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force
which was stationed there from 5th
March 1943 to 10th March 1943, aswell
as No. 405 squadron which were
stationed there from 18th April 1943 to
26th May 1945.
