Murano, Venice Gold Oselle (equivalent of 4 Zecchini)
1796, commemorating the '500 Volunteers of Murano'
during the war with the French. Extremely Fine, with a
fitted gilt leather case - a fantastic survival. In Venice a
pair of wild ducks were the traditional gift. The word for
wild fowl - 'Oselle' became the name for presentation
pieces such as this, given by the Doge of Venice. They
were produced in silver and gold, with the gold being
generally scarcer. This example was issued by Ludovico
Manin, the last Doge of Venice, in the year 1796 that
saw the invasion and destruction of the Venetian
Republic by the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte.
