The helmet has had a badge fixed to the front at some point as a hole has been made to take a screw back badge. The practice was forbidden as it weakened the helmet shell. The badge is no longer present and the hessian cover has no corresponding hole. Liner is complete but with some moth damage to the felt, part of the chinstrap is missing. One of the hardest pieces of British soldiers equipment to find, this cape was modified from a standard rectangular ground sheet in 1917 with the addition of a collar and buttoned front. It retains several of the original white buttons but the rubber, despite being pliable, has dried out and crazed.
