MM L/G 16th August 1917 for 9th Bn S.Staffs, served in 23rd Div as a Pioneer Battn in France, later Italy. "The man has shown great courage and resolution whilst in charge of transport. On the night of the 6th June his convoy came under heavy shell fire and several animals were hit. Several drivers dismounted and took cover. L/Cpl Salter however rallied them and galloped his convoy safely through. Prior to this, similar conduct on his part had been brought to notice by an Artillery Officer".
