His citation from P247 of the Regimental History as follows: 'The Great Crisis at Arras' Another recipient of the Military Medal was a young headquarters' runner, Rfn. George Thomas Phillips. On two occasions when volunteers were asked for he went forward through a very heavy artillery barrage and machine gun fire to get touch with the assaulting companies. His information was always accurate and of the greatest value, and he was at all times entirely regardless of personal risk. On his own initiative he organised leaderless men into groups, and by his own coolness and self confidence in the face of great danger was splendid example to all. On the 9th February 1952 a platoon of 'A' Coy.1. Welch were carrying out a daylight patrol. One section had gone forward about 400 yards in advance of the main body, but on the left of the mail axis, and had made good a bound. At this stage the main body came under enemy fore and were pinned down, after a short fir fight the leading section withdrew towards the main body, but owing to intense enemy fire failed to reach them. L/Cpl Hughes was then ordered to take out a section from the FDL's and make contact with the leading section of the patrol. The plan then was that both sections were to outflank the enemy and seize the high ground to the rear. The plan was put into execution, and was very successfully carried out against slight opposition. The section then moved towards the top of the hill itself where it was found that the enemy were holding in platoon strength. A fierce short range small arms and grenade fight, which at times developed into hand to hand fighting, took place between L/Cpl Hughes section and the enemy, who considerably outnumbered him. During the engagement, in which the enemy suffered heavy loss, L/Cpl Hughes personally wounded and disarmed an enemy soldier whom he took prisoner, but who later was killed by enemy grenade. Later L/Cpl Hughes skilfully extricated his section and joined the main body of the patrol without suffering casualties. During the operation L/Cpl Hughes displayed initiative and Courage of a high order and led his section with skill and determination. Throughout he set a fine example to his section.
