Lockdales Jan. 2012, lot 610 [part], reverse slightly off centre, GVF [3] (J.C.) £20 - £40 1598 Offa as Overlord of East Anglia, silver penny, under Spink 906, obverse:- Typical East Anglian Bust right, with long spikey hair and half diadem, long neck, on pyramidal shoulders which extends to coin edge, legend:- +OEFA REX followed by a square 'box' containing a chevron and a branch from Offa's shoulder as space fillers, the 'E' in OFFA is certain, the 'R' reversed. The reverse and moneyer seem indecipherable, being retrograde, upsidedown and runic:- AETHRERD both 'E's backwards, one 'R' backwards and upsidedown, possibly Aethred? The only other known to the cataloguer of this exact crossend reverse [the very few of these recorded have floral branch ends] is that Ex.
