115 1083 Captain Fryatt - Harwich Interest. A large water-colour of the famous Harwich ship the S.S. Brussel Captained by Charles Fryatt. Fryatt and the Brussels were captured after Fryatt had tried to ram the German Submarine U33 near the Maas Lightship on 28.3.1916. Fryatt was captured with the ship on 26.7.1916. and executed after a brief trial. He is one of Harwich's great war heroes. The painting is signed by A.J. Jansen & dated R'dam 1916. Vendor states: It was formally the property of G.W.A Mitchell a deck boy on the Brussels who was captured with Fryatt and spent the rest of the war in a German P.O.W. Camp. Jansen is known to have produced at least five other paintings of the Brussels and these were exhibited at the Fryatt Exhibition in Harwich in 2016 along with the present piece. This painting is also illustrated in the Great War Medal Collector Companion along with details of Mitchell. A copy of the book is included with the lot. Painting is in a contemporary frame and hung for many years in Geroge Mitchell's living room. Picture measures: 29" x 24" (frame). (2) £450 - £550 1084 East of England interest.
