"In 1939 this man accompanied the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) to France as the Adjutant, 2 Divisional Engineers and was given command of Field Company in Montgomery's 3rd. Division during the retreat to Dunkirk. He, with what was left of his Company, escaped Dunkirk by rowing much of the way to England in two open boats.
