bottom right, with 'Rotd 95' below,
87cm wide x 58cm high, - SS Amsterdam
was owned by the Great Eastern
Railway and built for use on their ferry
service from Harwich and Hook of
Holland, which the company had
initiated in 1893.The Great Eastern
Railway ordered three steamships to
operate the service. The ships were
named Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna to
publicise some of the rail connections
from the Hook of Holland. The vendors

Carliell who also resided in Harwich,
perished when the ship went down in
February 1907, he regularly worked on
SS Berlins sister ship- SS Amsterdam,
but when a worker was talken ill, he
was asked to replace him on the day SS
Berlin foundered.
