The Peter James Mills Collection

I am often asked why I collect coins. Simple, I have always felt a magical thrill when holding

a coin in my hands, knowing how much older it was than nearly everything else around me,

thinking of the times and places it had been, the many other hands it passed through until it

reached mine.

My first encounter with an old coin was an 1860 shilling that my mother had used to

feed a gas meter in the 50's having already used up all the others she had. After pleading with

the gas man she was able to get the shilling back, and this repeated itself often until both he

and she would be joking about it each time he came. Naturally in those days it was not

uncommon to get coins in your change that might be 50, 60 or even more years old. Since

decimalization of course this has ceased, as have so many other cherished aspects of bygone

times.

In 1968 my mother decided to take me to the bank with her to exchange some £1 notes

for bags of hundreds of big pennies. She sincerely hoped to find the elusive 1933 penny in the

last months before the good old penny disappeared from our pockets forever.

Needless to say, it didn't happen, but the fun we had did kick start my own life-long

passion and the goal to collect all the coins that had been issued since Matthew Boulton

introduced the Cartwheel. And although my dear old mum hung on to it for as long as she

could, I did coax the 1860 shilling from her eventually!

Well, a life-long hobby comes to an end as I now decide to let others enjoy these rare

and wondrous things of our past.
