YORK, MARCH. 8. 1809', nEF, edge knock and marks.
Gwyllim Lloyd Wardle was a Welsh Army Officer, M.P.
for Okehampton, and a radical campaigner. He was the
most prominent in prosecuting a case against Prince
Frederick, Duke of York and Albany in 1809, then the
Commander in Chief of the Army, whom he accused of
personal corruption due to his scandalous relationship
with Mary Anne Clarke. Wardle lost the case but the
Duke was forced into retirement. Wardle was later
accused and convicted of conspiracy with Mary Anne
Clarke against the Duke, and was not re-elected after the
dissolution of Parliament in 1812.
