Lockdales Auction 162 26-27 January 2019

111 2418 Ottoman Commemorative Medal, gilt-bronze d.100mm: Regeneration of the Empire 1850, Abdul-Mejid, (medal) by L. J. Hart of Brussells. Made to commemorate the 'Tanzimat' legal reforms. A spectacular medal, perhaps the most elaborate produced for the Ottomans. EF with minor surface marks. £2000 - £2500 2419 Papal Commemorative Medal, bronze d.41mm: Benedictus XIII (Pope 1724-1730), medal by Hameranus, EF with a surface flaw to right of bust. £40 - £50 2420 Polish Commemorative Medal, bronze d.68mm: 500th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland by Wincenty Trojanowski 1900, in the name of Emperor Franz Joseph (Poland was part of the Austro- Hungarian Empire), featuring sovereign portraits of Casimir the Great, Jadwiga, and Wladyslaw Jagiello, EF with original case. £80 - £120 2421 Seal Ring, bronze, seal 27mm, overall width 37mm, trace gilding. The bull emblem of Moldavia, with retrograde incuse legend 'SIM PETRI WOIWODE', similar to the coins of Petru II of Moldavia 1375 to 1391. Another potential candidate might be Petru Rares, first cousin once removed of "Dracula"; the other Petrus' reigns having been perhaps too brief and unstable to be likely. The fabric of the ring is of some antiquity, although perhaps not 14thC, as the script of the legend is fairly crude unlike the coins of Petrus II which feature a serifed gothic script. Ultimately could be a 19thC tourist piece made after the publication of Bram Stokers Dracula and the increased interest in the region; therefore potentially the Romanian equivalent of a "Billy and Charley". Would be a fabulous thing otherwise - SOLD AS SEEN. £60 - £80 2422 Seal Stamp, brass 21x41mm: A Romanian (or Armenian?) piece of fine workmanship, of significant age, 18th/19thC? £60 - £80
