Army Service Corps group to Captain (Qr.Mr.) Francis
William Hawkes, died 1965. He was born near Oxford
joining the Oxford L.I. in 1887 as a private, transferring
to the RASC later. Served as a Segt and C.Q.M.S. in the
ASC during the Boer War. As a W.O.II at Colchester, as
a 1st Class S.S.M. at Aldershot, Norwich and Dublin. In
1914 he was commissioned as a 2/Lieut and sent to
France on the same day. As a Captain he was officer in
charge of Discharge Branch, Records Office, Woolwich
Dockyard, where he commanded 21 officers and 422
clerks and personally signed 300,000 discharge warrants,
officer in charge of Supplies, Land and Water
Transport, Devonport Dockyard, and officer in charge of
Transport at Bulford Camp. Lot includes QSA with bars
CC/Tug H/OFS/RoL/Joh/DH/Belf. (three clasps are
contemporary copies). KSA with bars SA01 & SA02.
1914 Star with Aug - Nov clasp, Army LSGC Medal
EDVII, French Ministere of L'Interieur Medal in silver +
miniature (this confirmed with original newspaper
cutting). Lot also includes his original Boer War Accounts
Book, five large group photos, various original
paperwork, a book 'The Anglo-Boer War Album'. Plus a
large hand finished Certificate. (also entitled to the
BWM & Victory Medal, plus Meritorious Service Medal,
these are missing). Mentioned In Despatches 4/1/1917.
