28/3/1918 (Cosham). 'For conspicuous gallantry and
devotion to duty during enemy attack. When his platoon
was greatly reduced in numbers he collected a large
number of scattered men of other units and led them into
action in a most skilful manner. By his initiative and able
handling of his men he held up the enemy's attack and
inflicted heavy casualties on them'. GF (1)

11/3/1920. "On 7th Aug 1918 the battery was in action
in the Nieppe Forest and was subjected to a heavy
mustard gas bombardment which caused many
casualties. Although gassed he was the only one who
remained at his post and refused to be sent away. He
inspired all ranks by his determination and courage".
