Great war Casualty DCM group to 23291 L/Cpl. F.
Knowles 1st Bn. Worcs Regt, comprising; DCM Geo V
correctly impressed Pte F.R. Knowles 3rd Bn Worc Rgt.
1914/15 star (copy) BWM correctly impressed 23291 Pte
F Knowles Worc. Rgt, Victory (copy) court mounted for
display. Frederick Knowles went to France on 12th July
1915. He was awarded the DCM for "Conspicuous
gallantry on the 6th October 1915 at Sanctuary Wood
Ypres, when he went over the parapet by daylight within
40 yards of the enemy and dragged in a wounded man of
another regiment. The 3rd Bn held the trenches at
Sanctuary Wood from 29th September to the 8th
October 1915 under continuous attacks Frederick
Knowles was Killed In Action with the 1st Bn Worcs
Regt on 1st June 1918, the gallant stand at the "Grande
Marliere" on the Bouleuse Ridge, during which Col
Grogan won the Victoria Cross riding up and down the
tattered line encouraging the men. This last ditch defence
of the line was noted as a "wonderful achievement" by
the survivors of the 8
th
division. L/Cpl Knowles is buried
at Sailly Saillisel Cemetery. Born Mile End London, lived
Plaistow Essex, enlisted Stratford, Essex. NEF (4)
