the 5th Bn Northamptonshire Regt, later Killed In
Action at Salerno 23/9/1943. Ex Dr A W Stott
collection (DNW lot 269). Lot includes original named
medal condolence slip, Military Cross officially dated
1940 and additionally named Rev J E G Quinn, 1939-45
Star, Africa Star + 8th Army bar, Italy Star, War &
Defence Medals. MC citation as follows 'Rev Quinn
acted as chaplain to the bn throughout the operations in
Belgium & France and was outstanding for the cool
manner in which he tended to the wounded without a
thought for his own safety. On every occasion when the
bn occupied a defensive position he refused to go back to
the transport lines, staying in the forward area,
encouraging the men and by his personal example of
fearlessness inspired all who came in contact with him.
On several occasions, owing to the M.O. becoming a
casualty, he took charge of the R.A.P. He was badly
wounded on 28th May, while tending the injured. He
showed a fine example of coolness and courage'. He is
buried in Salerno War Cemetery. NEF (6)
