Artifacts, Roman and Anglo-Saxon, boxed the

Anglo-Saxon items noted as found 'Near Horncastle',

these include a 4th. century Roman crossbow brooch

an Anglo-Saxon Cruciform brooch of 5/6th. century,

two further Anglo-Saxon brooches of the 7/8th.

century and an Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger c.700-

c.800 A.D., which is illustrated in a booklet produced

by Scunthorpe Museum in 1987, it is listed as No.4

on page 7 and states 'Girdle hanger, from Horncastle

area. We are not sure what these objects were used

for but it seems likely that they were or represented

keys'. A copy of the booklet is sold with the 6 artifacts.

Augustus silver denarius, Lugdunum Mint 2 B.C. - 4

A.D., reverse:- Gaius and Lucius Caesars standing

facing, shields and spears between them, simpulum

and lituus in upper centre field, obverse struck a little

high, but nice portrait and good metal, VF

silver, couple of fakes, nice little mix of c.75 pieces

including a bronze of Cunobeline [75]

Bare-headed bust left, legend:- C CAESAR AVG

seated left, holding small patera and long sceptre,

field, Sear 1803, full, round, well centred, hard, even

black-green patina with brown-red areas, NEF

obverse 9 o'clock, very light scuffs obverse, GF/VF

[1625-1642] mm. bell [1634-1635], Group D, Type

3a, no inner circles, round garnished shield, no CR,

Spink 2791, full, round but flan a little uneven, a

good strike with centres struck up, most of portrait

visible GF

[1625-1642], mm. tun [1636-1638], Spink 2791, full

and round, portrait gone NF/GF, together with a

ditto but a silver half-groat, mm. triangle [1639-

1640], Group D, inner circle on obverse, Type 3a2-3,

Spink 2832, full, round, obverse slightly off centre,

crinkled, F/GF [2]

Ucede, moneyer not in the Yorkshire Syllogue but

looks to be from the same reverse die as that in the

Copenhagen Sylloge, pl.32, 832, with old ticket, full,

round, reverse slightly off centre, crinkled, dark, a

good space filler, NF/F

Coenwulf King of Mercia, silver penny, Canterbury

Mint, obverse reads:- +COENVVLF REX around

Mercian 'M' which is upsidedown, with a bar across

lower field, reverse reads:- SEBERHT, [retrograde

and 'HT' ligulated], this between tribrach of two

lines, a pellet at each central angle and each end,

Spink 914, J.J.N. 342, full, round, well centred, rough

surfaces, probably a detector find, complete but had

been creased leaving hairline surface cracks, clear GF

Coenwulf [796-821] silver penny, Group I [796-

c.805], Canterbury Mint, obverse legend:- X

COENVVLF REX, with central 'M' with bar above,

within inner circle, reverse legend +E/AB/A within

arms of a tribrach of three lines, the outer plain with

hook ends, the central with plain ends but made of

pellets, moneyer Eaba, Spink 914, J.J.N. 342, full,

round, well centred, with a flan flaw [split] at obverse

6 o'clock, dark even tone, rare, VF
