Gazette 29.4.1941. For coolness and skill when an enemy

aircraft was destroyed. Comes with original Certificate of

Identity dated 1st March 1949, witness ticket for

Buckingham Palace dated 28.10.1941, and his Certificate

of Service. Sidney Joseph Halstead was born on 5th

February 1916, from Ancoats in Lancashire, he enlisted

into the Royal Navy on 1st July 1940, he was awarded

War Service Increment on 3rd Sept 1944 and 1st July

1945. He was released on 27th December 1945. Sold

with slip for WW2 medals, and two letters relating to the

collection of the DSM at Buckingham Palace, various

newspaper cuttings relating to possible sale of medal in

the 1980's. Sold with a photocopy fromWW2 with article

as follows: When Able Seaman Sidney Joseph Halstead

of Briscoe street, Ardwick, Manchester, saw a German

plane swoop over his ship he crouched behind his gun

sights and waited. When the plane dived, he steadied

himself, shot and sent the plane crashing into the sea. His

shipmates of H.M.S. Brittany made him their hero. So

did his wife and mother. Lived Glengarry Close,

Chorlton-on-Medlock and died 03/06/1968. G.V.F.
