A Collection of Charles I York Mint
The property of a gentleman.
There follows a private collection of 37 pieces struck
at the York Mint during the reign of Charles I. The
mint commenced production in January 1643, in St.
Williams College in Minster Yard, a photograph of
which appeared in the BNJ, Vol.54, 1984, pl.7. The
denominations struck were halfcrown [1-7], shilling
[1-5], sixpence and threepence, see Spink pp.288-
289. The halfcrown seems to account for around half
the surviving specimens or about 80% of the face
value issued. It is thought the mint was working until
March 1644. Late in April 1644, Lord Fairfax and the
Scots besieged the City and in June they were joined
by the Earl of Manchester, the surrender being argeed
on the 15
th
of July.
