The Worcester Collection of Indian Coins
My Father began collecting coins from India when he was serving in the Royal Navy in India aboard HMS
Worcester; hence the name "Worcester Collection". His first coin was in fact his weekly salary. He liked the
look of the bright shiny new silver coin and decided to keep it rather go out on the town in India and spend it.
His fascination with gold and silver coins from India grew from there, and he acquired many of the coins seen
in this collection during the war years. He continued collecting after he was discharged and returned to the UK,
and tried wherever possible to buy the best quality pieces he could afford. He attended coin fairs and auctions in
the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, buying just a few coins each year as that was all he could afford. He stopped
collecting in the 1990’s and put the collection away in his loft where it remained until his death a few years ago
when I, his son, inherited it. I have thought long and hard about what to do but have decided that his memory
would best live on by sharing his collection with the world and by having a written testimonial of it. This
auction catalogue serves as that testimonial. I truly hope his coins find new homes in new collections when they
will become (ex Worcester Collection ) - A fitting tribute.
