Pistol: A good Napoleonic Officers flintlock pistol
based on the 1796 pattern heavy cavalry type, made
by John Richards (gunmaker of the Strand London
1775-1808). Full walnut stock in excellent condition.
Swan neck cock and original lock signed ''John
Richards'' barrel 9'' with engraved tang, brass tipped
ramrod, barrel with pleasing plum coloured patina,
the walnut stock with plain bag shaped grips and a
silver escutcheon which carried the family crest of
John James Abercorn (1756-1818) Lord Hamilton
and 1st Marques Abercorn K.C. and Privy
Councillor. Lord Hamiltons family had a long history
of bravery in the field and wisdom in council, the
Hamilton Crest comprises a Coronet and Crown
with an Oak Tree, frame saw and the word
''Through'' this was incorporated in the family motto
after Gilbert de Hamilton killed John de Spencer in
1325. Persued by the enraged Spencer family he took
refuge in a forest and disguised himself as a wood
cutter. As the Spencer party rode towards him he
shout ''Through'' (meaning the tree was sawn
through), the Spencers rode past taken in by the
disguise. The pistol was made for Lord Hamilton the
Irish Peer and Politician around 1783 when he
became an MP (1782-1789), probably for self
protection. He was a close friend of William Pitt The
Younger, and awarded the KG on 17/1/1805 and
became a Privy Councillor. This piece is in excellent
original condition and GWO.
