Indian Mutiny Medal with Clasp Defence of Lucknow to
J.Burns 78th Highlanders, he was very seriously wounded
at Lucknow on 09.10.1857. Asplin's Roll confirms only
one J.Burns in the 78th with the Defence of Lucknow
Clasp. With four pages of service documents showing
that 3192 Pte John Burns was born in Poona, Bombay
where he enlisted into the 78th Highlanders on 26th July
1850 aged 21 years by trade he was an apothecary. He
was discharge in June 1871 after nearly 21 years of
service. A member of the first relief force, Pte Burns was
very seriously wounded at Lucknow on 9th October 1857
by a musket shot to the right arm. On discharge it was
considered that the wounds scar may affect his ability to
earn a livelihood. When discharged Pte Burns was to
reside at 59 Waterloo Street, Glasgow. With a copy of
Asplin's Roll, service papers and birth details. GVF
