Adye on Pair). Ukerewe Island on 9th June 1917 at the
Western Great Lakes Lt.-Col. D. R. Adye Commanding
the Lake Detachment in conjunction with the Naval
Flotilla on the lake under Commander Thornley RN,
completely surprised the enemy, with eight Germans,
about 60 locals, and two small field guns being captured.

A.H.Walker RN (BWM officially ? renamed). With
copied service documents showing Gnr (later Lieut)
Walker's service as a rating and as a Commissioned
Officer including his various Commanding Officers
remarks on his service. Alfred Henry Walker was born on
15th October 1882 in Hackney, London and enlisted
into the Royal Navy on his 18th Birthday on 15th
October 1900 at which time his trade was a 'machine
boy'. He was posted on HMS Impregnable and Ganges
as a Boy 2nd then 1st Class, his first ship was HMS
Minotaur on 21st September 1903. He progressed
through the ratings on numerous ships being promoted
to Petty Officer 2nd Cl in March 1907 and Petty Officer
1st Class in December 1907. He passed the examinations
for gunner (Torpedo) on 3rd March 1913 and was
promoted Acting Gunner (T) 1st Cl. on 20th Feb 1914.
He was confirmed in the rank on 23rd Feb 1915. He was
commissioned as a Gunner (T) on 20th Feb 1924 and
initially placed on the Retired List with the rank of
Lieutenant on 15th October 1932 - his 50th birthday,
but rejoined on 6th January 1936 with his appointment
being terminated on 31st March 1938 only to be
mobilised on 28th September 1938. He was finally
invalided on 24th September 1940 at the age of just
under 58 years of age having served almost 40 years in
the Royal Navy. During the Great War Gnr Walker
served on HMS Monarch from March 1914 to August
1916. Monarch (Captain George Holmes Borrett; Orion-
class battleship; 1912; ten 13.5 inch (343 mm) guns,
22,500 tons) was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31st
May 1916. From August 1916 to April 1918 he served as
HMS Peregrine and on HMS New Zealand from April
1918 to February 1919. Lieut. Walker was still alive in
1952 and is shown on the 1952 List as Lieutenant
promoted from the Commissioned Gunners List (T)

Army LSGC Medal and GV Meritorious Service Medal
to 1381 T. Sgt W Halls 10th Hussars (SQ.S.Mjr W Halls
10/HRS). Enlisted Colchester July 1872, he was a
signaller at the time of the disastrous crossing of the
Cabul River in which nearly the whole of one squadron
was drowned. The next morning Hall received the
message by heliograph sent by Gen Sir Sam Brown to
Gen Gough telling of the disaster. In 1889 he transferred
to the E. Kent Yeomanry as Regimental Headquarters
Segt Maj. Later he went to the West Kent Yeomanry.
Then in May 1915 he joined the ASC as Quartermaster
and barrack master. Leaving in 1920 with the rank of
Captain. He served for nearly 40 years and was Lord
Byngs first Sergt Major. Lot comes with original photos
