OBE group - OBE (Mily) in Royal Mint case, BWM &

Victory Medal with MID (Lieut F J B Hammersley RAF)

plus Miniatures, Defence Medal. Francis James Bilian

Hammersley served with 22 Squadron and was a Prisoner

of War 8/11/1917 Shot down in Combat (possibly) by

Ltn. Dahm of Jasta 26 who claimed a Bristol

(Hammersley was in Bristol F2b A7283 piloted by 2/Lt

H G Robinson - Hammersley was Wounded). Born

Woolwich. OBE L/G 1st Jan 1944 RAFVR. Citation

reads 'Acting Squadron Leader F J B Hammersley, No 11

Group HQ This officer is one of the most skilful and

successful G.C.I. Controllers in Fighter Command. He

opened and commanded Willesborough and later

Sandwich G.C.I. Stations and personally controlled 97

attempted interceptions on enemy aircraft between the

middle of 1941 to May 1943. He has worked continuously

for many nights at the same time administering his station

by day. It was after an arduous period of such activity

culminating in his destruction of 3 FW.190's in one night

that he collapsed owing to over work. His health is now

broken and it is doubtful if he will ever be fit for further
