Boer War interest, very interesting hand
written journal by E.A. Rackham, the inside
front page reading 'South African War 1899-
1900', he left Liverpool for Capetown on 13th
Dec.1899, arriving there on Dec.30th, from
there going to Duran etc., with accounts of
fighting to include " 2 days hard fighting took
ridge after ridge for 3 miles, 290 Officers and
men killed and wounded". The Journal
continues through to Sept. 20th, together
with, black and white photograph album
entitled 'South Africa 1900', with images of
Durban,
Transvaal,
Standerton
Bridge,
Ladysmith Station, Pretoria etc., approx. 90
images, one other hand written diary,
addressed H.W. Onslow Carey, army service
corps, Alpha House, Farnborough, Hants.
With his accounts of arriving at Cape Town
on Nov. 9th 1899 onwards. Reading "the big
guns started shelling the boers position, our
troops came well under fire, they were shelled
and fired on very heavily. Our losses seemed
to be very heavy" and "the fellow was struck
by a bullet in the left ????, the bullet passed
straight through his body and came out at his
back just near the shoulder blade". With more
hand written accounts possibly by the same
hand, various ephemera etc., needs viewing.
