peace, printed by Johnston and Barrett
Mark Lane, London,- The Rebecca Riots
took place between 1839 and 1843 in South
and Mid Wales, they were a series of
protests undertaken by local farmers on
percieved unfair taxation, the rioters often
men dressed as women, took their actions
against toll-gates, the origin of Rebecca is
in The Old Testament 'And they blessed
Rebekah and said unto her, let thy seed
possess the gates of those which hate them',
it was this passage which was used as a
basis for the dressing up of men in women's
clothing to act the part of Rebecca in
attacking the toll gates, the document
