Late 19th Century original hand written
letter by Sergeant Thomas Monks, who
sounded the bugle for the charge of the
Heavy Brigade, the letter dated Nov. 25th
1893, the letter detailing his version of
accounts to include "just after this, the Assr
Surgeon came riding beside me, I said it
was getting rather hot, I said I wished he
would move away from me, he said Why?, I
told him as he was wearing a cocked hat, he
would be a marked man, so he rode off
towards our camp ground, shortly
afterwards one of the Greys was struck in
the stomach by a ball, but no doctor could
be procured, Iam not sure whether he did
not have to leave the Regt. for it". "When
the order was given to charge, our 2nd
Squadron & the Squadron of Greys went
right thro the Russians". "Then the order for
our 1st squad & the 1st squad of the group
was sounded & we all got mixed up
amongst each other. The Russians crying
merci anglais". "Major Shute told me to
sound the regt'al call & had got some of the
men ready to charge again, when the
remainder of our brigade came up &
charging among the Russians, and made
them retire?. When I heard our men cheer I
did not know what was the matter, when
all at once 2 guns of our artillery let drive at
the Russians as they went over the hill".
