Crimean War interest, quantity of letters
and correspondence addressed to Colonel
John McLoughlin from J. Velitchko - a
Russian Hussar giving his account of the
battle of Balaclava. The letters also
thanking the Colonel for the portraits sent
of himself and various other British soldiers
to include Colonel Whinyates.This lot
includes a watercolour portrait of
Velitchko wearing the Hussars uniform
worn at the time of the battle. The verso
enclosing a letter explaining the portrait
was painted by his son, dated Moscow 1893
to bottom right corner. The verso portrait
also with inscription "In Remembrance of
the Balaklava Charge 1854 13/25 October, to
an English Artillery-Man Colonel J
McLoughlin, from his friend a Russian
Hussar, J Velitchko". With twelve detailed
letters, all dated 1890's, some with original

reading 'an order from Capt. Oldfield R.A.,
a few days before he was killed in the
trenches, when he commanded the left
siege train before Sebastopol', written in
ink, 20cm wide

from a soldier called John William Gloag,
writing home to his son George, one
addressed Cavalry Camp, Balaklava,
January 5 1855, the other adressed Crimea,
August 4th 1855, reading "Do you remember
Sergeant Breeze? at the great battle of
Inkerman, a cannonball killed the horse and
man next to him, and the ball then struck
Sergeant Breeze on the arm and carried it
away and he has suffered greatly", "The
other day when Lord Cardigan was at
Constantinople, he went to see our sick and
wounded soldiers and left £100 to be
divided among them, besides giving many
of them two or three pounds each. This was
very kind, I know you would all like to do
what you could for poor wounded soldiers"
