Gunner RAF (49 Squadron), who was shot down over
Doorwerth, Holland in 1943. Only two survived when
the Lancaster Bomber went down. He was held at POW
Camps Luft 6, and Stalag 357. Medals mounted as worn
- 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, War Medal and
Dutch Erasmus Medal. With various research, two

was in danger of being drowned owing to exhaustion
after making several attempts to save one of the crew of a
Motor Launch which had hit a rock and blown up near
St Ives Cornwall. 29th Sept 1918. Escott was in turn

Royal National Lifeboat Institution Medal George IV
(silver) named Alexander Donkin Voted 10 May 1827.
An official replacement medal. On 7 March 1827 The
sloop James was wrecked at 9pm on shore near
Cullercoats, Northumberland, in a heavy easterly gale. A
boat manned by nine fishermen, made two unsuccessful
attempts to reach the wreck. Meanwhile Mr Donkin
plunged in amongst the breakers and swam until he
reached a rock some 40 yards from the wreck. He was
then able, after much difficulty to save the Master of the
sloop, James Marr, who had jumped off the wreck. the
two men were then taken off by the nine men in the local
boat which had been pulled over the rocks to launch
from a new site. *Mr Donkin reported the medal as lost
and on 3/10/1833 a replacement medal was voted.
