Kings Police Medal Group to the Chief Constable of
Folkestone Borough Police. Order of St John Breast
Badge in silver and enamel, Kings Police Medal (GV
coinage head) named PS (CID) Alfred Beesley
Metropolitan Police, 1911 Metropolitan Police
Coronation Medal named PC A Beesley, 1935 Jubilee
Medal and 1937 Coronation Medal. Plus Chief
Constable of Folkestone lapel badge and Miniatures
group. KPM L/G 1/1/1924. Superb citation 'At about
10.30am on 5th July 1922, the two Sergeants were in the
vicinity of Denmark Terrace, Hornsey Road, keeping
observation on two men suspected of stealing and
receiving stolen bicycles, when on of the suspects
mounted a machine and rode away. The second man
was interrogated by the officers and being unable to
satisfy them, was arrested by Sgt Beesley, who proceeded
with the prisoner to the Police Station. On theway to the
station the suspect by asking questions and calling the
attention of the Sergeant to a passing cyclist, attempted
to put the officer off his guard. The prisoner then
endeavoured to wrench himself free and commenced to
run forward and, as Sergeant Beesley closed with him,
produced a revolver and fired two shots wounding the
officer in the leg. Sergeant Hobbs who was about 15
yards in the rear, wheeling two cycles connectedwith the
charge, quickly rushed forward and together with
Beesley, who, although wounded had still clung to the
man, succeeded in overpowering the prisoner, though
not before he had fired fourmore rounds, none of which
fortunately took effect. This was undoubtedly due to the
action of Sgt Hobbs, whowhile struggling on the ground
had kept the prisoners pistol hand forced against the
pavement. GVF
