No.4 Dress Jacket of Major General Sir Ian Freeland. It

was made for him by tailors Conway Williams in July

1963, just as he was about to take up the post of GOC

East Africa Command. The Jacket is in good condition

but has a number of small holes owing to wear and tear

on the fine gabardine fabric. The Jacket still retains all his

insignia and medal ribbons. Sir Ian was a very interesting

soldier, having been Commissioned into the Norfolk

Regiment in 1932 and served as Adjutant in 1940. After

a number of staff appointments he commanded 7th

Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, in Normandy and

was awarded the DSO. He later commanded 1/5th

Queens Regiment during the capture of Ghent for which

he was decorated by the Belgian Government. He held

many post-war appointments including GOC Northern

Ireland just before, and at the start, of The Troubles. He

was appointed Colonel of The Royal Anglian Regiment

in 1971 and held the post until 1976.
